Several studies done over the years by educationists and neurophysiologists have shown that music has a big influence on the cognitive and psychophysical development of humans—especially children.

It is believed that when children are exposed to music, especially when they are toddlers or even before they are born, it has a deep impact on their cerebral cortex region. It creates neuron pathways in the brain making them understand the world and language in a faster and easier.

Imagine if just listening to music has such a deep impact, how much impact will be playing musical instruments have on a student? There are several benefits that a student can get when they learn music at school.

Music is an extremely critical subject at schools as it leads to better brain development, increases human connection, improves grades, helps to socialise, and even lowers stress levels.

Music also helps students to develop good reading skills.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is one of the most common chronic childhood disorders, affecting around 11.32% of school-going children in India, according to this study. As per the study, the prevalence of ADHD was higher among boys (66.7%) as opposed to that of girls (33.3%). The prevalence of this disorder was 16.33% among the lower socio-economic groups and 6.84% among the middle socio-economic group. ADHD was the highest between the age group of 9 and 10 years, according to the study.

When compared with the student population in India, the number of children suffering from ADHD in India is quite huge, running into lakhs. When undetected and untreated, it can continue into adulthood causing loss of career, reputation, relationship, self-esteem, and more.

But what constitutes ADHD? Difficulty in keeping attention, hyperactivity, fidgeting, excessive talking, trouble in taking turns, difficulty in following directions, and impulsive behaviour.

Although ADHD symptoms reduce with age, there’s no guarantee that it will melt away completely as you age. There’s no treatment available to cure ADHD, it can only help with controlling the symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment can help with better educational, social, and behavioural outcomes.

While it’s not clear about what causes ADHD, researchers and scientists believe factors like genetics, environment or problems with the central nervous system during development might be the main reasons.

It’s also important to note that it’s difficult to diagnose ADHD in kids under 4 as they change very fast and after they become teenagers.

Only a paediatrician or a child psychiatrist or both will be able to determine whether or not your child has ADHD. There is no single test for ADHD and the assessment process is quite lengthy, sometimes going up to 2 days involving counselling, consultation, and sometimes non-invasive brain mapping. ADHD in children needs a strong support system, which should involve parents and teachers.

Positive Sides of ADHD Children

Not all children with ADHD have a problem with intelligence. It has been observed that children with ADHD can be extremely talented. Here are their positive sides:

  1. Creative: Children who have ADHD are not laggards in anything they can be amazingly creative and imaginative. While it’s true that children with ADHD daydream and can have multiple thoughts going on in their minds simultaneously, it is also true that they can become problem solvers and can notice what others don’t or haven’t.
  2. Flexibility: As mentioned above, children with ADHD have lots of thoughts going on in their minds, they do not stick to one alternative, but will consider a lot of other options.
  3. Enthusiastic: Children with ADHD aren’t fixated with one thing, they love exploring newer and different things. This means they can be pretty excited about anything around them.
  4. Energetic: These kids are very energetic and they cannot be swayed away from any task they are doing at the moment. It’s very difficult to distract them.

How to Find Whether Your Child has ADHD?

Children are always on the run. What they like today may not be their favourite activity tomorrow. They forget so many things- homework, pencils, keys, clothes, and more. They fidget constantly. They may write only half of their assignments. They may talk loudly or talk nonsense. Does all this mean they have ADHD or ADD? May or may not be. This is how kids grow up. These are typical childhood traits and they will outgrow these later in life.

In order to diagnose whether or not your child is suffering from ADHD, you need to meet a paediatrician or child psychiatrist or both.  However, you can do your bit by checking for the warning signs.

Symptoms may differ with each child however there are certain common traits that you can check for yourself. There are 14 symptoms that you need to look out for.

1. Self-Centric Behaviour

Children often cannot recognise the needs and desires of other people. They interrupt others when they are not supposed to and will have issues waiting for their turn at school, home, and events. They are attention seekers and will need attention at all times.

2. Trouble Reading

Children might have trouble reading or might not read beyond a certain point as they do not get interested.

3. Trouble Talking

Kids with ADHD may have trouble talking. Either they talk too much or too less or too irrelevant. They might speak without thinking and later realise that they should not have uttered the words.

  • Emotions

A child with ADHD may have trouble keeping their emotions under control. They might get angry at the slightest instance or inappropriate times or cry when they are not required. Younger children may throw tantrums.

  • Can’t Sit/Stand/Stay Still

Children with ADHD  can’t sit, stand, or stay still. They get restless staying still and may get annoyed when forced to stay still.

6. Can’t play quietly

As the kids are quite fidgety, they cannot play quietly and cannot engage with others or in any leisure activities.

7. Incomplete Tasks

A child with ADHD will always have his mind at different places at the same time and hence they will have problems finishing a task on time. For example, they may start work on something but move on to the other things catches their interest before finishing.

8. Lack of Focus/Attention

Children with ADHD/ADD will always have trouble paying attention to anything or anyone. For example, when someone is speaking to them directly, they’ll say they heard you, but they won’t be able to recall what you just said.

9.Avoiding Tasks That Require Thinking Process

They only think as much is required and will avoid doing tasks where they need to think extra. They do this because they lack focus. They will mostly depend on others to think for them.  This can be anywhere- home, school, just about anywhere.

10. Repeated Mistakes

Children with ADHD will always have trouble following instructions and will have trouble executing any plan. This often leads to careless mistakes.

11. Daydreaming

Children with ADHD are always in their world ignorant about what’s happening around them. If they are in a classroom, they will not pay attention to what’s being taught. If they are home, they will not listen to anything being said as too many thoughts are going on in their minds at the same time.

12. Lack Organisational Skills

A child with ADHD will always lack organisational skills. They will never be able to keep track of tasks and activities either at home or at school.

13. Inattention

Kids with ADHD will always be absent-minded and may be forgetting to do daily activities. For example, they may forget to carry subject textbooks to school or forget where they kept the keys of their cycle or may not know where they kept their toys.

14. Introvert

Children with ADHD may be introvert and may not socialise much when they are around others in a family gathering or parties or weddings. They always think the work is watching them and talking about them.

                     —————————————————————————————–

ADHD occurs more often in boys than girls and behavioural traits might be different in boys and girls. For example, boys with ADHD will be more hyperactive and girls may be quietly inattentive.

With rising awareness about ADHD and adult ADHD, diagnosis too has become commonplace now. More people are coming forward to get their children or themselves for ADHD. There are videos on how to self-detect ADHD symptoms and how to get out it, ADHD in children need not be taken as a menace, as there are coping mechanisms to overcome it.

ADHD Treatment for Children

Stimulant Medication

For a very long time, psychiatrists have prescribed stimulant medicines as they are more effective than other medicines. These medicines are known to increase focus and decrease impulsive behaviour. While some medicines need to be taken for the lifetime, depending on the severity of the case, some can be withdrawn after a while. All of these medicines are not addictive and have been proven to be safe. Only a psychiatrist will be able to decrease or increase the dosage based on how the child responds to the treatment.

Non-Stimulant Medications

There are non-stimulant medicines that are prescribed as feasible alternatives for children that cannot tolerate stimulant medications. Although these medicines give the required effects, they might have some side effects which the psychiatrist will be able to say.

CONCLUSION

All children will exhibit all or some of these behaviours at some point in time while they are growing. These may not necessarily be signs of ADHD.  But if te behaviours persist for a long time, then you need to speak to a psychiatrist. ADHD is something that will stay as the child ages and stays into adulthood. There are many ways one can get rid of ADHD such as a combination of education, behaviour therapy, home, and school support, exercise, and proper diet and nutrition.

There’s nothing to worry about ADHD. Several people have had ADHD in their childhood yet became successful in their adult lives. It all depends on how early the symptoms were diagnosed and how they worked around the ailment.

Parenting a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) can be challenging, even overwhelming at times. However, there’s no need to rush to a doctor yet because you can do your bit to help your child overcome the challenge. However, the earlier you act, the greater the chances of your child succeeding in life.

Raising a child with ADHD isn’t easy. Household chores that seem routine to other kids and parents can become difficult for children with ADHD because they have a problem understanding and organising their day: they cannot think and plan their day, they cannot organise themselves, they cannot control their impulse or complete a task on time. While some of these are common to most children considering that they are finicky, it also makes it difficult for parents to figure if their child suffering from ADHD.

Children with ADHD will do whatever is told to them but they don’t know where to begin. They will happily agree to keep their toys back in the drawers, write their homework, make their bed, or even clean their room, but they just don’t know how to make these happen.

There are ways you can help your child overcome ADHD with a little support, some compassion, and a lot of patience. You must start living with the fact that children with ADHD have brains that’s completely different from those of normal children and this makes them have impulsive behaviour.

In order to live with a child with ADHD, you will have to make changes to your behaviour and also learn to deal with your child’s behaviour.

One important point to remember is the impact that a child with ADHD will have on the family. They are slow to learn, understand, and do any task, can get easily distracted, and are pretty disorganised. These behaviours can interrupt family life.

Children with ADHD don’t think before speaking and will say things that may put them or their family members in an embarrassing situation. They can also get angry at the slightest instance and create a scene at the most unexpected times.

These issues can cause problems for the siblings of children with ADHD. Their needs are often neglected and they are given less attention. Their successes are not celebrated. They are also more susceptible to rebukes from parents than the child with ADHD.

For parents, taking care of a child with ADHD can be mentally and physically frustrating and this can cause exhaustion in the long run.

However, in order to bring up a child with ADHD, you need to learn certain lessons that will not just make your life easy but also that of the child.

Here are some tips that you can use to help your child:

Tip 1: Stay Positive At All Costs

ADHD can only be controlled with medications or self-efforts but not cured. There will be times when your child will test your patience with his/her behaviour and in this situation, you must stay calm and maintain a positive position. As a parent, you know best how to make a positive impact in the life of your child. You know what works best for him/her and what doesn’t.

When you have patience and composure, you will be able to connect with your child in a much better way by helping him/her to be calm and positive.

Please remember to make some compromises. If your child leaves something midway or never finishes it, be nice to him/her and tell him why it’s important to finish the job. If he/she doesn’t like it, give something else. It’s important you keep your child engaged.

Make him write the day’s work and ask him to check the work at end of the day. Have faith in your child. When you believe that your child can do wonders, he will do wonders. Just give him/her the time and space.

Tip 2: Be Flexible

You know that your child is suffering from ADHD and you know that what’s normal for other children may not be normal for your child so define the rules but be flexible.

Don’t be too strict with your child as that’s not going to help both of you. When you set up rules keep in mind that children with ADHD may not adjust to changes as early or easily as other children his/her age. Allow your child to make mistakes but you also need to point out the mistake so that he/she doesn’t repeat it. Do not discourage your child from doing anything just because you think it’s wrong. Children with ADHD disorder cannot make out good or bad behaviour, so you must tell them about it.

Tip 3: Decide Acceptable and Unacceptable Behaviour

Children with ADHD act on impulse and the ultimate aim of a parent should be to prevent that from happening. Make modifications to your child’s behaviour and tell him clearly what will be behaviours will be tolerable and non-tolerable at home, outside, and school. This may require you to have sympathy, affection, energy, patience, and strength.

Make rules that are simple are clear to understand as your child might have difficulty comprehending the rules in the first place. Reward your child every time they follow the rules. Make a list of house rules and paste it in a place where it is easy for him/her to read. Keep repeating the rules until your child remembers it fully well.

Tip 4: Manage Aggressive Behaviour

As mentioned above, children with ADHD may display aggressive behaviour at times and it’s pretty common among them. If at any time they show any aggression, tell them to calm down and enforce it they don’t listen. Due to their behaviour, even you might get angry and in that case, you need to count until 10 or tell your child to count until 10 until his/her anger goes away. Any behaviour, that is abusive toward you, family members, or other kids, must attract punishment.

Tip 5: Encourage Exercise and Sleep

Enough has been written about how crucial exercise and sleep are to the body. The benefits of exercise/ sports/ physical activities are endless: for one, they help the children get energy. They also improve concentration while reducing depression and anxiety. However, the most important aspect is it helps the children to get better sleep, which has been linked to a reduction in the symptoms of ADHD.

Send your child to sports where concentration is very important. Sports like football cricket, chess, athletics, gymnastics are very helpful in improving their attention.

We have all read about how insufficient sleep can seriously impact our body. Psychiatrists recommend ADHD patients to get mandatory 8-hours of sleep in order to reduce symptoms of the disorder. It helps the brain to function in a better way but will not solve the problem completely.

There are many ways you can improve your child’s sleeping hours:

  1. Reduce TV time both during the day and night.
  2. Reduce caffeine. While it’s okay to give tea or coffee once in a while, according to doctors, caffeine actually makes kids active and hampers with their sleeping hours. They are also addictive.
  3. Give them activities to calm their minds. Activities like colouring or reading a book are known to induce sleep.
  4. Spray scents that have a calming effect on the body.

Tip 6: Vacation/Holidays

Kids love holidaying just like adults. It’s very well know how holidays improve people’s performance. In a similar way, go on a long holiday once a year or shorter holidays many times a year. This will not just improve your child’s performance but also his effectiveness.

Tip 7: Make Friends

Children with ADHD often live as loners as they find it difficult to make friends. Teach your child how to make friends. The impact that friends have on one’s life is immense.

Please remember that children with ADHD are intelligent and creative. Once they make friends, they will ultimately figure out how to get along with them.

We all know that children are picky eaters. For all parents, it’s easy to think about their children refusing to eat, because it’s a common scene across the world. Despite their best efforts, most parents, although aware of the benefits of nutrition and diet in the child’s growth and development, are unable to convince their children to eat healthily.

Why is Nutrition so Important?

There’s a strong connection between growth and learning with nutrition. Nutrition is as important for children as it is for adults, but children’s nutritional needs are different. They need higher and better nutrition than adults. While it is true that the three factors that play a crucial role in the child’s development are nutrition, environment, and genes, it’s nutrition that goes a long way in improving their health and academic performance in later years.

Health and Nutrition

There is a strong connection between health and nutrition and we all know how important nutrition is for a healthy body. Any disparity between the nutrition we need and nutrition we get can lead to growth mismatch.

Children need just the right amount of nutrition, just like adults, and under or over nutrition can cause health issues. The benefits of good nutrition toward health are well known. When growing children are given nutritious food, they will suffer less from severe illnesses like diarrhoea and meningitis. This is because children with better nutrition have better immunity to fight infections. Undernutrition has its own set of health problems. It can lead to a decrease in the child’s daily activities, social life, and thinking and behavioural abilities.

Academic Performance and Nutrition

It has been proven beyond doubt that what a child eats affects his/her academic performance. The child’s brain is growing at a rapid pace and nutrition plays a very important role in helping the child think and read. For example, children that are breastfed have higher IQ, while children with iron deficiency have reduced cognitive abilities at schools.

Sports and Nutrition

We all know the role that nutrition plays in enhancing our body. Look at all the sportspersons and you’ll know why they give so much importance to nutrition. The same is true for children. If they need to develop endurance for sports, they need better nutrition.

You need to plan carefully for the healthy growth of your child and this starts with healthy food full of minerals, vitamins, and proteins that are essential for their growth. As opposed to adults, children process food better as their metabolism is better.

Here’s a nutritional age-wise chart. The chart contains nutrition for both boys and girls. Plan your child’s diet based on this chart.

For the first year, give your child only breast milk.

There are other foods too that you can give your child. If you want to introduce your child to any food that you eat at home or which has not been mentioned in the chart, talk to your paediatrician first.

Chart courtesy: https://parenting.firstcry.com/articles/a-guide-to-nutrition-for-kids/

Processed Milk Food

As mentioned earlier, children are fussy eaters. Some children may take instant liking to some food and may not like eating some other food. In that case, most parents give their children milk food supplements. Milk food supplements are not healthy and can make your child obese in the long run. Also, these supplements are processed, which means they do have some chemicals or preservatives in some form and quantities which is not good for a growing child. They make your child feel full and give them the recommended daily nutrition but in the long run, can cause serious health issues.

If your child hesitates to eat home-cooked food, sit with them and make them understand why it’s important to eat nutritionally-rich food. Tell them how nutrition will help them grow to be healthy individuals.

Water

We all know that water makes up more than half of our body weight and is crucial to keep our body functioning normally. While adults ideally need about 8-10 glasses of water every day, there’s no specific water intake recommended for children. However, it’s good to give them water throughout the day and not just when they are thirsty or ask for it. It’s said that babies do not need water during the first year of life, however, you can give them water after the baby is 9-10 months old. The water has to be boiled and cooled and only a spoon or two must be given at a time. It’s better to check with your doctor once if your child can be given water.

CONCLUSION

  1. Teach your children healthy eating habits and physical activities early on. Children follow their parents, so become good role models.
  2. School going kids grow quickly and change physically and mentally, so ensure their food habits too change. Introduce them to new food once in a while.
  3. Eat at least 1 meal with your child on weekdays and two-three meals every weekend. When you eat healthy, they will emulate in eating healthy.
  4. Keep TV, computers, and mobiles away when you are with your child.
  5. When you eating with your child, tell him about the benefits of the food on the plate. Tell them about the nutritional value of the food and how it’s beneficial for them.
  6. Small children have small stomachs and get full quickly. Don’t force your child to eat when they say they are full. Give them child-sized servings.
  7. Give them fruit or something healthy between meals.

Exams are a mystery for students as they don’t know what’s in store for them. While some students fear the very thought of writing an exam, some students consider it no less than a competition. There’s no short cut to prepare for any exam and the reality is if you have to clear any exam, you have to study smart and prepare well.

One of the smartest ways to prepare for any exam is to follow a timetable and give time to every subject. Another smartest thing to do is to read and understand the previous year’s exam papers. While it’s a fact that every exam is not the same and authorities tinker with the exam pattern and questions every year, the basic premise remains the same. Going through the previous year’s papers give you a general idea about the exam format and kinds of questions that will appear.

There’s an old saying that if you don’t know the battlefield, you’ll never win the battle. And this theory holds good for the CBSE exam as well. For clearing the upcoming CBSE 10th exam, you need to know the exam pattern.

Techniques for Using Past Papers

One of the most important parts of any exam preparation is to go through the previous year’s papers. The best practice is to look at the last five year papers. You can solve the papers completely or look at bits and pieces at topics of your interest, the choice is entirely yours. If you are preparing topic wise, look at the questions about that topic and prepare well. Once you are thorough, move to the next topic and find the questions about that topic in all the five years and work on them. This way, you are not only understanding the whole topic but are also preparing for the important questions. This technique can be very helpful in for preparing the CBSE 10th exam.

Advantages of Using Past Papers

While you’ve started preparing for the exam, you must revise your syllabus rather quickly so that you can have time for revisions and solving mock tests or previous papers. This way you get a general idea of the upcoming exam as well as get a hold on the important topics of a particular subject. Previous year’s exam papers give you an approximate idea of the number of questions and the choices that are available. It also gives you an idea of which topic will get more coverage. Another advantage of solving previous year’s papers helps with effectively managing the time.

This blog is meant to give you the benefits and links to past question papers.

1.           Reduces Stress

One good way to reduce exam-related stress is to take a look and solve previous year papers as it helps with gaining an understanding of the questioning pattern and helps them prepare well. The previous year’s question paper will give you an actual overview of the paper pattern such as types of questions asked, marks distribution, long answer types, short answer types, mostly asked topics and others.

2.           Helps With Preparation

While previous year’s papers may or may not be based on the latest syllabus prescribed by the board, they may, however, give you an idea about repetitive topics and questions. This way you can prepare well for frequently asked questions or important questions that carry high marks.

3.           Best Reliable Source of Practise

From a practical point of view, the previous year’s question papers are essential for exam preparation. You have heard “Practise makes a man perfect” and the more you practice, the better you get. As you solve the old papers, you will be able to eliminate your chances of attempting the wrong answer. You improve your writing and thinking speeds, while also improving your time management skills. You will also learn techniques that are best for you. By solving the previous year’s papers, you also realize that many questions are common across the years, so, you know what is important and what to ignore.

4.           Quick Self Evaluation

Solving previous years’ question papers shows the level of your preparation. Self-evaluation is a crucial ingredient for any exam preparation. It helps you learn from the mistakes that you do while solving these papers and helps you in determining the strategy that you should follow while continuing the preparation.

5.           Identify Strengths and Weaknesses

Another benefit that you gain from solving the previous year’s question paper is it helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses and where you need to improve.

6.           Helps in Revision

While you have worked hard on studying, how do you gauge your preparedness? Previous year’s papers help you analyze your preparedness level.

We have attached the papers for the last five years for important subjects. You can download these and start preparing for the exam.

The CBSE Xth board standard exams are less than a month and a half away. Over 20 lakh students will be taking a shot at the first competitive exam of their lives. CBSE exam for class 10 is very significant as it heralds a glorious future for the students. The fact is CBSE exam can be tough but you can overcome that by planning smart and putting the right effort.

When you want to start preparing is entirely dependent on you and a one-strategy-fits-all approach doesn’t work here. While some students start studying right at the start of the academic year, some start preparing closer to the exam date. Success in an exam like the CBSE exam for class 10, needs a well-disciplined, careful approach as it a major determiner of your future. However, please remember it’s not hard work but smart work that will win you the game in the end.

Here are nine last-minute tips that you can use to successfully prepare for the CBSE class 10th exam to be held in the months of February-March 2020.

  1. Keep Your Mind Calm and Free

It’s common for students to panic and get nervous before an exam. To avoid getting stressed on the day of the exam, wake up early, meditate or exercise and eat a healthy breakfast to keep your body active and relaxed. Keep everything ready a day before the exam like stationery, books, admit card, uniforms/clothes, and others to avoid last-minute rush.

  • Make Notes and Revise Daily

Making notes of all the important topics is crucial for preparing well. While studying, you must make a note of all the important points in a notebook for a quick reference. If you have not already created notes, you must do it now. Go online to get a list of all important topics and summaries and download them on your computer. You can use all or parts of these notes for a quick reference.

  • Keep Away from Last Minute Preparation

DO NOT study at the last minute. You must prepare at least two days in advance and keep the last day only for revision. Remember any last-minute preparation can become hectic and lead to unwanted stress and confusion. Use the time you have to solve more problems and sample papers.

  • Keep Calm on the Day of The Exam

Reach the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the exam as it helps remove half of your tension. It is observed that rushing to the exam centre at the last minute can cause fatigue leading to loss of composure.

  • Master Time Management Skills

As with any exam, the CBSE 10th exam also has several sections— some easy and some tough. As there is no section wise restriction, you must first answer the sections that are easy and take less time and keep the lengthier or tougher sections for later. This way you will save time and have enough breathing space before you attempt other sections.

Regardless of how busy your schedule is, you need to manage your time well. Create a study timetable that you can follow and monitor the progress of the time-table every day.

  • Seek Help

While studying for the exam, should you have any doubts at any point of time, seek immediate help from friends, classmates or school teachers. Never keep a doubt pending until the last minute as it’s going to harm your preparations. There are even portals that can help you clear your doubts.

  • Get Proper Rest

It’s important that you take proper rest before the exam. Sleep on time and wake up on time on non-exam days and wake up early on the day of the exam for a quick study before the exam. Sleep for a minimum of 8 hours before the exam. As this is a pen and paper exam, give your hand proper rest. Do not strain your hands at all.

  • Have a Systematic Approach

Remember, every problem has a solution and a workaround. For example, if you’re struggling with math, ask your teacher or search online for another approach to solve the problem. Same with physics.

  • Speed and Agility

Every question is important and needs to be approached accurately. Do not spend more than 2-3 minutes per question and if you are struggling with a question, move to the next one and revisit the unanswered ones later. This way you are answering maximum questions while also having time to come back to the ones that were not answered.

While the above points are important another important tip you must remember is to have CONFIDENCE in yourself and your abilities. While all exams are important and equally tough, it’s your confidence that will take propel you to the top of the ranking table. Have an “I CAN DO” attitude and no force can stop you.

All the best for your exam and stay positive.

If you have any feedback, questions, or comments, please write to us in the box below and we will get back to you.

CBSE exam for Class 10 is an important stage in children’s lives, determining their future prospects. In a little over three months from now, the fate of lakhs of CBSE 10th standard students will be sealed as the board exams come to an end.  One question that will be on every student’s and parent’s mind: What next?

As you go on asking this question to yourself and others, you will hear words like take up science. Others would tell you to take up commerce or humanities as their scope has increased immensely over the years and earning potential is better.

However, it’s for you to choose the right career option. You must listen to everyone and decide where your interests lie.  The days when science or commerce was considered as the ultimate career path are long over. People with engineering backgrounds today work as artists and journalists, students with B.Com degree have started start-ups, and those with a degree in arts/humanities are in the government or are doing business.

However, if you are still confused with what to take up after your 10th, then you are not alone, thousands and thousands of students like you face the dilemma of what to do after 10th standard. Nevertheless, this blog will clear your conundrum by breaking down the scope of each of the stream to help you decide the best career path.

How to Choose the Right Stream?

With respect to future possibilities, the CBSE exam for class 10 remains in high regard. Firstly, make a list of your strengths, weaknesses, and interests in a book. Now compare your strengths and interests with the streams that match your skills. Get all the knowledge about the stream and career choices available in that stream. Mix and match the choices with your skills until you boil down to a few that you think are right for you.

Unlike western countries where students have the freedom to choose their career paths, the problem in our country is students follow the crowd: follow what their friends in choosing a stream or get influenced by parents or elders in the family. While this was okay back in the days, it makes no sense today as students have thousands of career options to choose from. So, if you are taking a stream just because your friend did so or to please your parents, then you are not going to enjoy your professional life. Remember, your friends’ career interests are different from yours and what suits them will not necessarily suit you.

Think twice before you shortlist any stream. Ask yourself questions like is this the right path for you? Will this career keep you satisfied? Are you in it for the long haul? Is this where you want to make a career? Will this career be monetarily rewarding? When the answers fall in the positive, then you have chosen the right path.

In order to choose the right career path pick the stream that matches your interests, skills, and abilities.

Major Streams

There are three major streams that you can choose after class 10th: Arts/Humanities, Commerce, and Science. There are others too but more about them later. The top three streams have been classified based on the top subjects and the career options they offer. For example, when you take up arts/humanities, you can specialise in languages, sociology, psychology, economics, history, political science, and others like geography. If you take science as your specialisation at the +2 level, you can specialise in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, or computer science. Finally, there’s the evergreen commerce that has seen a revival of sorts. Commerce specialisations include accountancy, statistics, economics, business studies, and others. Commerce is mostly related to business, trade, financial sector, and industry.

Let’s now break down the scope and career prospects of the streams.

SCIENCE

Science is often preferred by students that want to get a professional degree after 12th standard/+2/pre-degree. The main subjects in +2 science are physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, computer science and/or electronics. Besides studying the core subjects, you will be doing a lot of lab activities.

With a background in science, you can pursue a career in medical, dental, engineering, pharmaceuticals, nursing, and architecture. For example, if you want to study medicine/dental/nursing/pharmaceuticals, you will have to study physics, chemistry, maths, and biology. If you want a career in engineering or architecture, you have to replace biology with either computer science or electronics.  There are other career options that you can choose apart from the ones mentioned above and these include researching, teaching or writing. For that, you’ll have to choose your options right. Now is the right time to decide your future career path.  Few of the graduation options that you can pursue after science are B.Sc., B.E./B.Tech, MBBS, BDS, B.Arch, B.Sc. Nursing, B.Pharm, BCA, and others.

COMMERCE

The days when a commerce graduate could only get into business or accountancy are long gone. The scope of commerce is much more widespread now and includes fields as diverse as banking, finance, trade, stock trading, investments, and more. You must take up commerce if you have strong analytical abilities.

The main subjects in commerce are economics, accountancy, finance, business studies, mathematics, and statistics. Some colleges might offer computer science as one of the major options.

A few of the major graduate programmes after commerce at +2 levels are B.Com, BBA/BBM, and BMS. Some colleges also offer 5-year integrated law courses like B.Com LLB or BBA LLB and if your law is your passion, you must consider studying commerce at +2 levels.

ARTS/HUMANITIES

Unlike commerce and science, arts/humanities has the widest scope for students today. Some of the main subjects in arts are history, economics, psychology, political science, sociology, and more.

The career prospects in the humanities stream are immense—you can get into the government, study law, become an artist and lots more.

For all the programme, language classes are important. English is one of the compulsory languages that one has to study in +12 either as a first or second language.

POLYTECHNIC/PARAMEDICAL COURSES

There are other courses that you can pursue after the completion of your 10th standard.  These are often known as vocational or polytechnic courses and are meant to make 10th standard students job-ready by skilling them in a particular trade in just 2 or 3 years.  Depending on which state you live in, vocational and technical courses words can be used interchangeably and some states use the words to distinguish one course from the other.

These programmes have two components: Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Diplomas. ITIs offer certificate courses whereas diplomas, offered by polytechnics and most engineering colleges, are the closest one can get to engineering. Almost all diploma programmes, except for a few, are for three years while ITI courses are for two years.

Most Indian universities allow engineering diploma holders to take lateral entry into 2nd year of engineering programmes while that is not the case with ITIs.

A list of polytechnic courses you can take up after 10th standard:

Diploma in (3 years)

  1. Mechanical Engineering
  2. Computer Science
  3. Civil
  4. Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)
  5. Information Technology (IT)
  6. Automobile
  7. Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)
  8. Biotechnology
  9. Electrical
  10. Chemical
  11. Aeronautical
  12. Agriculture
  13. Architecture
  14. Biomedical
  15. Marine Technology
  16. Mining Technology
  17. Leather Technology
  18. Textile Technology
  19. Petroleum Technology
  20. Plastic Technology
  21. Rubber Technology

Most engineering colleges offer all or some of these programmes apart from the regular B.E./B.Tech. programmes. Some colleges may have an entrance test followed by an interview and some may have direct admission which will be done on the first-serve-first-come basis. Please check with the local engineering college or a polytechnic for the exact admission details.

ITI (2 Years)

  1. Fitter
  2. Computer Operator
  3. Civil (Draughtsman)
  4. Mechanical ( TV & Radio, Motor Vehicle, Diesel, Marine)
  5. Electrician
  6. Plumber
  7. Surveyor
  8. Machine Tool
  9. Fireman
  10. Welder
  11. Cookery
  12. Paint Technology

There are other short-term (6 months) courses that you can do after completing your 10th standard. These are:

  1. DTP
  2. Tally
  3. Animation
  4. Graphics
  5. Web Designing
  6. Cyber Security

Conclusion

Choosing the right career path after completing the 10th standard is important for a lifetime of happiness. Trends are changing and what was true 10 years ago might not hold any water now. Consider this: Medical and engineering are no longer amongst the most satisfying career options today. Today chartered accountants are amongst the highest paid people, sometimes more than doctors and engineers. Then are lawyers that specialise in patents or corporate matters who earn six-digit salaries year after year. There are even coaching centre owners who earn in crores each year just by teaching IIT/IIM aspirants. In short, there’s a lot one can do in any field as the businesses have started accepting graduates of all stream. However, it all boils down to what you choose to do and where your interests lie.

However, before you take a call on what’s right, you must analyse the educational and career prospects of each stream and choose the stream that suits your interests better.

CBSE has released the date sheet for the 2020 X board examination. The first paper will be on February 15, 2020, and the last paper will be on March 20, 2020. In this blog, we will look into the details of the exam and discuss important preparation tips.

                          ————————————————————————–

With less than two months left for the exam, the right time to start preparing is now. In fact, a month and a half are enough for you to study and successfully clear the exam.  CBSE exams are among the easiest to crack as the board stresses more on critical thinking and reasoning abilities and less on rote-based learning. When we are looking at the trajectory of the CBSE board exam, class 10, it is understood that a decent amount of preparation is a must for achieving success.

In the aspect of the CBSE board exam, class 10, a well-disciplined approach towards study is very crucial.efore diving straight into how to prepare, let’s look at the exam pattern as it will help you to strategise and plan better.

The CBSE X standard exam pattern, released by the CBSE includes details like marking scheme, the difficulty level of the questions, number of questions and types of questions, marks and more. It’s important to remember that paper pattern and marking schemes differ with each subject as some subjects have only theory and other subjects have both practicals and theory.

CBSE reviews the exam pattern every year before making it public and makes the question paper based on this pattern. This year the CBSE X exam pattern will on 80:20 pattern, of this 80 marks will be for written exam and 20 marks will be for internal assessment—periodic tests, notebook submission, subject enhancement activities.

One point to note is that for the upcoming exam, all the questions will be from CBSE books and not from NCERT books.

To pass the exam, the student must score a minimum of 33% marks in both theory and practicals.

Let’s now look at subject-wise marks breakdown.

For Language 1, Language 2, Science, Mathematics, and Social Science, the paper will be for 80 marks in each subject and will include 100% of the class X syllabus. For each individual subject, both marks and grades will be awarded. CBSE will follow 8 point grading system.

According to the new rule by CBSE, schools will have to conduct an internal assessment of 20 marks to assess the student’s creativity, punctuality, reading skills, writing skills, and subject knowledge. This also includes a periodic test of 10 marks, notebook submission of 5 marks and subject enrichment activities of 5 marks.

For Language 1, Language 2, Science, Mathematics, and Social Science, each paper will have 20 marks from the internal assessment. This includes:

10 marks from periodic tests:  for the final submission, the best of two from the three periodic tests will be considered.  Periodic tests are not only meant to check the student’s preparedness but also to find out if any remedial measures are needed to help the help. These tests are pen and paper-based.

5 marks from notebook submission:  this includes regularity of notebook submission, timely assignment completion, organisational skills, and neatness of the notebook.

5 marks from subject enrichment activities: this includes speaking skills, listening skills, practical lab work, math lab work, map work, and project work. There are also separate activities such as narrations, conversations, and dialogues, that are considered for marks.

There’s also a 6th additional subject and marking scheme followed either languages 1 &2 or subjects will be followed.

Grading System

CBSE assesses students on an 8-point grading system. The grading system has been recreated below:

Marks Range Grades
91-100 A1
81-90   A2
71-80   B1
61-70   B2
51-60   C1
41-50 C2
33-40 D
32 and Below E (Fail)

Grades will be given after considering the marks range obtained and considering both formative and summative assessments, grades will be given.

The upcoming CBSE X exam 2020 will consist of Very Short Answer (VSA) type questions, Short Answer(SA) type questions, Long Answer (LA) type questions.  along with the making scheme.

CBSE Class 10th Exam Preparation

Here are the examination preparation best practices that you can follow.

Tip 1

Familiarise With the Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The first step toward preparing for the upcoming exam is to familiarise with the exam pattern and syllabus. We have mentioned the exam pattern in this blog. Secondly, take a deep look at the CBSE class X syllabus. CBSE has made it clear that the upcoming exam will have questions from CBSE books only and not from NCERT books.

Tip 2

Make a Time Table

Once you have taken a look at the exam pattern and syllabus, prepare a timetable that you think suits your study plan well. Work on it until you get it right. Once your schedule is ready, follow it religiously and stick to it. Don’t give way to complacency.

Without a proper plan in place, you’ll be unable toreach your target. Make a schedule that you can maintain and follow. You must start with difficult subjects/topics first and keep the easier ones for later preparation.

Tip 3

Solve Sample Papers

Solving sample papers is one of the most effective strategies that you can use to prepare for the exam. There are two benefits to solving sample papers: 1. You will know what kind of questions will appear in the exam 2. It will help you manage time effectively.

Another benefit is it will also help you to analyse your preparation level. While you are solving sample paper, keep an eye on the clock because it will help you track your paper solving speed.

Sample papers are available freely online. Check this link and this link.  You can even buy them at a neighbourhood book store in the form of a booklet.

Work on as many mock tests as possible. Make time for mock tests as they will help you get good with timing and concepts.

Tip 4

Practice Previous Year Question Paper

Another way to prepare for the CBSE class 10th exam is to practice and solve the previous year’s questions papers. There are two benefits to practicing the previous year’s question paper: 1. You will get an understanding of the nature of the exam and the type of questions appearing in it. 2. You will understand the nature of your preparation and based on the level of preparation you can make improvements.

Tip 5

Take Regular Breaks While Preparing

While it’s true to remain focused, it’s also important for you to take short breaks while studying. It’s believed that taking breaks will help you relax, de-stress, and clear your head. This will make your studies effective and efficient. Having multiple study sessions with regular breaks will not only help your brain remember the information but also improve concentration and motivation.

Tip 6

Take Proper Rest

Take rest every day. Get proper sleep, play sports, go to movies or parks to de-stress.  Getting fear or anxious before the exam will hamper your chances of getting good marks.

Tip 7

Study in a Group

It’s always fun to study with a group of friends or classmates. Not only does it help you learn better, but it also helps in understanding the concepts better as the group will always have a new or easy way to get around concepts.

Tip 8

Revise Formulas

One of the most important things about any exam is to remember formulas that are used in mathematics and science. This is the time you should start working on formulas and remember them by heart. Revise these formulas every day to ensure you do not forget them on the day of the exam.

Tip 9

Make Notes

It’ s important to make notes while you are studying and use them for a quick reference on the days of the exam. This way you are saving time and effort.

Tip 10

Stay Positive

No exam is tough and no exam is easy. It all depends on how you prepare for it and take it. Ensure you study all tough subjects/topics at the beginning and keep the easier ones for the last. All the important topics should be revised after every few days.
